Information on Botox (P.O.M)

Botulinum Toxin is a P.O.M (Prescription Only Medicine) I (Kirsty) work with both Dr Andrew Osafo and Paramedic Prescriber Rachel Jefford, who alongside me will offer you a free consultation to assess you to see whether you would be eligible for Botox treatment.

Botulinum Toxin uses the toxin produced by the bacteria responsible for botulism in food poisoning. However the amount of toxin used is minimal and generally well tolerated in clinical trials. The toxin temporarily weakens the muscles responsible for developing facial expression lines caused by muscle activity. Static facial lines e.g. those due to sun damage will not usually respond to treatment with botulinum toxin, as they are not caused by muscle activity.

Botulinum toxin is licensed for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe vertical lines between your eyebrows (Glabella lines) The horizontal lines across your forehead and around your eyes. The Botox is injected into the skin to reduce these lines. You would be having these injections because the severity of your lines has now had an important psychological impact on you.

After I have administered your treatment I (Kirsty) will ask you to practice facial expressions, such as frowning, squinting and raising your eyebrows. This is as there is evidence that this will help absorb the toxin quicker into the treated areas avoiding risk of you moving the toxin to adjacent muscles.

You'll need to avoid alcohol consumption and applying make up for 12 hours. Remain upright and refrain from sleeping for up to 4 hours after treatment. Also avoid extreme sun exposure, UV light, freezing temperatures and saunas for 2 weeks after treatment. Do not fly for up to one week after treatment. After your treatment you should start to see an improvement within several days, however the full effect can take up to 30 days.

I (Kirsty) will offer you a 2 week review to check the progress, compare pre op pictures with the post op result pictures i will take during your visit. I may use some before and after photos (Not showing the whole face or exposing the identity of my client. This is purely for advertising reasons only.) This is not compulsory so If you do not want your pictures posted please let me know.

During your review i will possibly add more units of the botox (free of charge) if i feel that your results have not met my expectations. The treatment varies depending on an individuals response and life style. The aesthetic effects of the botox lasts on average 3 months. However this will vary depending on the product/ dilution used, the condition of your skin, the area treated, the amount of product injected, and as mentioned your life style factors such as sun exposure, sun-beds, smoking, exercise and your daily water intake.  However, just like with many other beauty regimens, consistently using Botox makes each application work better. That’s because wrinkle-causing muscles get weaker with each repeated use, allowing the impact of the injections to last longer.

Common side affects of botox are headaches and injection reactions e.g. redness, swelling, irritation, rash, itching, numbness, pain, discomfort, stinging, brushing and bleeding. Normally these reactions are mild to moderate, reversible and occur in the first week after treatment. There is also a small possibility of slight drooping of the eyelid/eyebrow or visual problems.

Very rarely botulinum toxin may result in muscle weakness away from the site of the injection. It may cause temporary blurred vision via the muscle weakness. If affected, you should not drive or use machinery. If symptoms were to last longer than one week or if you had any other worries or concerns I (Kirsty) would tell you to call or contact me as much as you wanted to help best advise or reassure you.
